The Evolution of Crypto on Stocktwits

Stocktwits has always been an early mover. Back in 2017, when crypto was just starting to gain momentum, we became the first platform to organize conversations around the Cashtag.

To make it work, we introduced the “.X” suffix. Bitcoin became $BTC.X, Ethereum became $ETH.X, a simple way to clearly separate crypto from equities. At the time, it was the innovation that made conversations easier to follow.

Eight years later, the landscape has changed. Crypto isn’t a side market anymore. It’s mainstream. And just like then, Stocktwits is evolving ahead of how traders and investors communicate. Our next step is about creating a simpler, clearer, and more modern experience, one that reflects how markets actually talk today.

What’s Changing

  • No More “.X”Crypto tickers now look like equities. Bitcoin is $BTC, Ethereum is $ETH. Simple, standard, and in line with how traders already post.
  • Smarter SearchType “BTC” or “Bitcoin,” and you’ll instantly see all relevant results, split into equities vs crypto. No extra suffix required.
  • Logos on CashtagsCompany and project logos now display next to symbols, so you can spot equities and crypto at a glance.
  • Richer Crypto Data: More context, charts, and insights to help you trade smarter and stay on top of the conversation.
  • Community Pages: Communities can now claim their pages, giving groups identity and ownership as they grow.

Why This Matters

The “.X” served its purpose. It helped establish crypto conversations at a time when the industry was still emerging. But today, it’s no longer needed. By removing it and layering in smarter tools, logos, and richer data, Stocktwits is making streams clearer, posting easier, and discovery seamless.

This is the next step in connecting conversations, data, and communities across markets. Just as we were first to bring Cashtags to crypto, we’re evolving again to make following the future of finance as intuitive and straightforward as possible.
