Best Practices

Stocktwits prides itself as a venue for market participants to congregate for the purposes of mutual discovery, sharing, networking, and learning. We strive to be the place for investors and traders to quickly get up to speed on market-moving information and insight which is driving real-time changes in investor mood and sentiment.

To ensure these goals are met, a community with vested interest in constructive and organized dialogue is essential for everyone to receive maximum benefit from their experience on Stocktwits.

Let’s keep it professional by remembering we all want to make money and better trades and investments. In this spirit, here is a short and simple guide of Do’s and Don’ts that when practiced keep the conversation and discovery on point to the benefit of everyone.

Do’s – What You Should Do

1. Include a $TICKER e.g. $NVDA, $TSLA, $SOFI

- Your message shows up in the right stream

- Helps distribute your post across Stocktwits Feeds

2. Use reply or @username for personal conversations

- Avoid tagging tickers in side chats

- Keeps streams focused on actionable ideas

3. Be a curator of quality content

- Share useful posts, articles, or trade setups from others

- Builds trust and thought leadership

4. Give credit

Use “via @username” when sharing someone else’s work

5. Give shoutouts

Highlight smart contributors — it raises the bar for everyone

6. Answer questions

Two-way conversations improve your own experience and help others grow

House Rules (Zero Tolerance)

1. No Abuse

Disrespecting others directly or indirectly won’t make you any money and will not be tolerated on Stocktwits. We all have different levels of experience and capitalization — but everyone is here to share, discover, learn, and grow. No user should feel threatened, belittled, or harassed in their community.

  • Insults & Harassment: You may not send messages that insult or harass another person on Stocktwits.
  • Threats: You may not send messages that threaten another person on Stocktwits or anyone.
  • Derogatory Language: You may not send messages that are derogatory or racist against a particular group of people on Stocktwits.
  • Vulgarity: You should not use vulgarity in a tagged message or within your Stocktwits username or profile.

2. No Spam

You are encouraged to share links with your community that provide excellent and actionable content derived from your service or newsletter. However, we ask that you do not promote or send links that are advertisements to your service. Nor may you send links that are “subscriber only” requiring a login or signup (free or paid) to view your content. Messages sent for the express purpose to drive user signups or pull conversation away from Stocktwits ticker streams will be deleted and escalating restrictions will be placed on your account, ending in permanent account suspension where necessary.

Below are activities that we consider spam.

  • Linking to a landing page or sales pitch instead of the idea or content promised in the message is spam.
  • Sending unsolicited replies, mentions, or direct messages promoting a paid service or product is spam.
  • Tagging a message or link that has little or nothing to do with the $TICKER is spam.
  • Posting the same, or very similar, messages or links multiple times is spam.
  • Sending messages promoting gains on trades that you did not originally share on Stocktwits is spam.
  • Following large numbers of users for the purpose of soliciting follows is spam.
  • Liking messages for the purpose of soliciting follows is spam.

3. No Cheerleading or Bashing

While it’s certainly understandable to get emotional when a position is wildly going your way, repetitive cheerleading or bashing of a $TICKER is noisy and doesn’t add any value for other users. Less is usually more. Please make every effort to only send messages that offer something new to the stream. Nobody wants to sift through endless messages from the same user who is constantly repeating himself.

4. No Bot-like Behavior

Accounts that show signs of automation, i.e., copy-paste spam, mass posting, or scripted behavior, will be permanently banned.

5. No Inappropriate Avatars

Avatars showing nudity, violence, or offensive content will result in restrictions or bans.

6. No Off-Platform Recruitment

Posting Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, or other third-party group links is not allowed and may result in suspension or a permanent ban.

Don’t Feed the Trolls

  • If someone is being abusive:
  • Click the “•••” menu on their message
  • Select Report message
  • Then click Block user

This flags the account for moderation and removes their content from your stream.

Internet Realities (and What You Can Do)

  • The internet is anonymous - trolls and bad actors will exist
  • Stocktwits uses both algorithms and human moderators
  • But you also have power:
  • Use the report → confirm → block flow to keep your experience clean

This triggers a moderation review and may lead to warnings or bans
